The Cherokees were formed in the small ex mining village of Thorpe Hesley on the outskirts of Sheffield in 2000.
They are a 4 piece :
Paul Foder - Vocals/Guitar/Piano/Keyboards, Coupe - Bass/BV, Ash - Guitars, Al - Drums/BV
They all grew up together with the backdrop of the English civil war on their doorstep - the miners strike of the 80's - and more particularly the aftermath of it. Not being part of the great British regeneration of the period, mining villages were left to rot. Paul's father was a refugee from Hungary who escaped to this country - ending up in Yorkshire for no real rhyme or reason. Paul grew up more an outsider than most.
So The Cherokees don't necessarily make happy happy music. Its quite inward looking - well, what was the point in looking outward? But at the same time its uplifting and honest. They take their influences from epic bands such as Queen and Radiohead but don't wear them on their sleeves. The Cherokees are very much their own people.
Having played gigs recently with the likes of The Killers, Gene and Longview as well as a number of Sheffield gigs, The Cherokees are just getting ready to unleash themselves on the world. |
